PESHAWAR: A senior worker of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was gunned down by unidentified armed assailants in Peshawar late on Saturday night.

The Faqirabad police said that Sheraz Safi was standing outside his home on Saturday night when unidentified armed men suddenly rode up to him on a motorbike and opened fire at him.

The attack left him seriously injured.

He was rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where he succumbed to his Injuries.

Police later told the media that Safi was a PML-N worker and was connected to the party’s central and provincial leadership. They further said that his social media profile included pictures of him which were taken with party leaders, including former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and other former ministers and leaders of the party.

After completing a post-mortem and other formalities, the victim’s body was handed over to his family for burial.

Meanwhile, the Faqirabad police have started investigations in the case.

Previously, only Awami National Party leaders have been the subject of targeted killings in the city, but recently members of other parties including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl group (JUI-F) and now the PML-N have also been targetted.

The security agencies have warned PML-N’s provincial leader Engineer Ameer Muqam about attending public gatherings owing to threats against him.
