Excessive use of antibiotics

Letter April 11, 2019
The authorities concerned should strictly monitor doctors and antibiotics should only be sold upon prescriptions

TURBAT: At present the misuse of antibiotics is quite common in Balochistan. Physicians are prescribing antibiotics to patients for common diseases, a dangerous thing to do as it leads to antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotics are dangerous when consumed often for ordinary ailments such as common cold and fever. However, physicians in our area advise patients to take antibiotics for such ailments, which cause patients more harm than good in the long run. Despite knowing that antibiotics are used to treat only bacterial infections, doctors often prescribe them for viral infections. This misuse makes patients resistant to antibiotics, and it often results in complications for patients. The authorities concerned should strictly monitor doctors and antibiotics should only be sold upon prescriptions.
