KARACHI: Mauripur SHO Raja Tanveer was suspended by the South DIG Sharjil Kharal on Sunday for raiding the birthday party of a transgender person at Hawksbay. The DIG ordered an investigation to be initiated against the official.

Police raided a beach hut at Hawksbay, located in the limits of Mauripur Police Station. They disrupted a birthday party and tortured the guests. The video of their illicit actions against the transgender persons present at the party had gone viral.

When contacted, Keamari SP Erum Awan told The Express Tribune that there was loud music being played at the party. She said that residents had gathered near the hut and some of them had harassed the transgender persons. Police had reached the scene upon receiving a complaint, she said, adding that an inquiry has been initiated and the facts would be clear after that.

However, the suspended SHO told sources that the raid was carried out on the directives of higher officials over the violation of standard operating procedures (SOP) and the national action plan by transgender persons. According to him, a complaint against them was made by the owner of the hut and the complaint is present at the police station. Sources claim that Clifton police had also raided the same hut a few months ago.
