Students and technology

The positive and negative impacts of technology of growing minds

KARACHI: Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. People all around the globe rely on it for all sorts of reasons, such as communication, research, seeking employment, etc. As the world is developing, more gadgets are being introduced, and people’s dependence on them is growing. On the one hand, technology has a remarkable positive role in our life, but on the other hand, it has negative impacts as well. Despite the ease and advancement that technology has brought with it, the students of today have been adversely affected by it, especially the younger population, which is in its growing age.

Children naturally replicate what they see; hence, exposure to violence on television, movies, and recent video games increases the risk of violent behavior amongst teenagers. Also, with the increasing use of mobile phones, text messages, e-mails, and chat rooms, the youth has created new means of social interaction, where aggression and bullying is a common occurrence.

Small children avoid physical activities once they have been given access to these gadgets. Instead of going out to play, they prefer watching a cartoon or playing a game on the tablet or phone. Lack of activity along with consuming junk food leads children to gaining unhealthy amounts of weight. While the consequences may not show now, children suffer later on in their lives, making this a major reason why children should not have access to electronic gadgets until they reach a certain age.
