RAWALPINDI: In a bid to cultivate large swathes of barren land in the Potohar region, small dams and ponds should be built in the area. In this regard, the Agency for Barani Areas Development (ABAD) is working on various projects in the region.

This was stated by ABAD Director General Aasia Gul during a visit to some mini-dams built by the agency in collaboration with the agricultural department in Sohawa, Jhelum and Attock.

Gul said that the Punjab government had constructed these small dams to help irrigate land in arid areas of the region.

She added that the increased sources of water will not only improve the environment but also boost underground water levels in the region.

Moreover, she said that the government will take measures to better protect farmers.

The construction of dams and ponds in Potohar will bring prosperity to the farmers, she added.

Punjab Land Protection Director Malik Ghulam Akbar stated that they were strictly supervising every scheme of land and water protection while resources were also being utilised to maintain their standards.

He added that all these schemes were for the preservation of water in the arid areas.
