ISLAMABAD: The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) on Sunday welcomed the special students who recently won 62 gold, silver and bronze Medals at the Special Olympics 2019.

During the reception arranged by AIOU’s Department of Special Education, the varsity’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Ziaul Qayyum assured the winning students the university's all-out support in their educational pursuits.

International Office Director Dr Zahid Majeed said that the differently-abled won the medals by demonstrating their extraordinary talents.

“This was a great honour for the entire country,” he said, adding that university will continue to provide free educations to the deprived sections of the society.

He added that currently, more than 350 special need students are getting free education from Matriculation to the PhD level.

The AIOU has taken over its social responsibilities in accommodating less-privileged people including prisoners, transgender and out-of-school children.

Mahfooz Elhai, an Industrialist who had a leading role in supporting the differently-abled, said that it was his life mission to serve the marginalized sections of the society.

He said that the differently-abled have a lot of potential and they needed to be encouraged by all possible means.
