Patriarchal mindset

Every day, women fight against the patriarchy which constantly treats them as lesser humans

KARACHI: The scores of people who ridiculed the messages of women’s rights and freedoms that were disseminated on the International Women’s Day through the Aurat March must refer to the story of Asma Aziz, a resident of Lahore who was stripped by her husband before his employees for refusing to dance for them. The employees held Asma as her husband shaved her hair off and burned it in front of her. She was even tied by a pipe and hung from the fan. When she went to the police station to register a complaint, the police tried to extort money from her against registering her case. This is a serious failure of justice as law-enforcers only entertain the influential or those who can grease their palms.

Every day, women fight against the patriarchy which constantly treats them as lesser humans. In cases such as the one mentioned, women are treated worse than how animals treat their own kind when they are retaliating against the other. The authorities should hand out an exemplary punishment to those involved in abusing Asma so that it acts as a deterrent for such men.
