Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Friday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the country inches closer to Lok Sabha elections, NDTV reported
The former batsman is likely to contest elections from one of the seven Delhi Lok Sabha seats. He joined the party in the presence of Union Minister Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Speaking on the occasion, Gambhir thanked the ruling party for giving him an opportunity to do something for the country. He stated that he was impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his vision, and this was the reason why he decided to join BJP.

“I will work to take this country forward and make it a better place to live in,” he told the gathering.
Gambhir made his one-day international debut for the Indian national team in April 2003. He was part of India's squad when they won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and Cricket World Cup in 2011. He retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018.
