Senate takes up cause of NCHD’s unpaid teachers

House leader told to resolve the issue of arrears of some 17,000 teachers.

Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek on Monday directed Leader of the House Nayyar Bokhari to hold a meeting with representatives of the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), the Implementation Commission and the Planning Commission to resolve the issue of arrears of over 16,000 to 17, 000 teachers of NCHD within 15 days.

The government had earlier decided to devolve the NCHD to the provinces under the 18th amendment, jeopardising the fate of around 30,000 employees.

The previous government, in cooperation with the international community, planned to provide education to around 15 million children under the ‘Education For All’ programme. Speaking on a point of order, Professor Ibrahim of Jamaat-e-Islami and Senator Jamal Khan Leghari drew the attention of the upper house of parliament towards the thousands of teachers protesting in the federal capital for not being paid by the government for 10 months now.

During the proceedings, Naek asked Nayyar Bokhari to arrange an emergency meeting with chairperson NCHD Dr Nafeesa Shah, Chairman Implementation Commission Raza Rabbani, Chairman Planning Commission and representatives of government teachers to resolve the issues. Senators across party lines demanded that the government pay their arrears as soon as possible.

Haji Adeel of ANP suggested that at least six months’ advance should be given to teachers so that they can arrange alternative jobs during this period. Senator Raza Rabbani said the Council of Common Interest under the head of Prime Minister Gilani is looking after NCHD affairs.

Leader of Opposition Issue

Taking part in the constitutional debate on the appointment of leader of the opposition, Haji Adeel said ANP is a coalition partner of the government and they should not be considered as opposition members. Senator Raza Rabbani and other legal experts will kick off the debate on the controversial appointment of the Leader of the Opposition Abdul Ghafoor Haidri today.

Mohib khan dpme | 12 years ago | Reply NCHD has added valuable part in delivering to the education and literacy through out 130 districts of pakistan. It has also won UNESCO litercy award 2006. The NCHD has opened thousands of schools across the country with only the volunteer teachers only paid rupees 2500 per month as a honrarium contrary to 7000 rupees minimum pay per month as per govt of pakistan pay standards. But despite all there injustice, the federal and provincial governments have no ears to hear to no eyes to watch the demands of the employees of NCHD but have adopted an inhumane latti charge and tear gases no the protesting employees of the commission for their due rights. We repuest the president, THE prime minister, The implementation commission and the CCI to look into the matter and give the denied justice.

Tufail Khan | 12 years ago | Reply NCHD is the largest development sector organization,which is working for the betterment of the poor massess of Pakistan and is trying to fill the gap of service delivery .It is the organization which is running succefully the Pakistan's cheapest ever schools(with a budget of Rs.2500 or US dollars 30 only) in the areas where there are no goverment schools.NCHD has also received the UNESCO award for literacy in 2006 If this organization is dissolved it will not only be a great set back for the 16000 employees of that organization but will also be blow for the image of the country.It is the duty of civil society,legal faternity,media , teachers and students of this country to save this organizaion from being dissolved.
