England, who made 419 in the first innings before dismissing Bangladesh for 216, enforced the follow-on and routed the visitors for just 123 in their second innings.
It was Steve Finn and James Anderson who caused all the damage to the Bangladesh innings as they failed to negotiate the moving ball. Anderson took three and Finn claimed his second five-wicket haul in Tests to ensure that no batsmen scored more than 20 runs except Mahmudullah, who managed 38.
Tamim Iqbal, the only batsman to offer any resistance in the first innings, was dismissed by Anderson by two as Bangladesh collapsed to 39 for six. The match was all but over for the visitors – facing a deficit of 203 runs – even as Mahmudullah delayed the inevitable. England captain Andrew Strauss was pleased with his team’s performance as they prepare for the Ashes series. He said, “It was encouraging the way the bowlers went in helpful conditions and I’m pretty happy with how things have gone. But sterner tests will come.”
On the other hand, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan singled out the moving ball as the main problem for his batsmen. Iqbal, with 268 runs and Finn, with 15 wickets were named player of the series while Ian Bell was the man of the match for his 128.
