At least three people were killed as a residential building collapsed in Karachi's Jaffar Tayyara Society on Monday, reported Express News.

The four-storey apartment building collapsed at around 7:30 am and rescue efforts are still underway, as officials fear several people are trapped under the debris.

Initial reports suggest at least 16 people were residing in the building. Officials confirmed that at least two people have been rescued and transferred to a hospital till now. An injured child was also recovered from the debris by the rescue team.

As for the cause of the collapse, officials said a house was under construction adjacent to the affected building and may have been a contributing factor.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and has sought a report immediately.

Similarly, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail has directed the Karachi commissioner to mobilise all resources to expedite the rescue operation.

"Human lives should be saved at all costs. Such tragedies are a result of the poor performance of the Karachi Building Control Authority and Malir Development Authority," said Ismail.
