Water-stressed country

Letter February 25, 2019
Poor management has led to many cities in the country facing an acute shortage of water

TURBAT: Pakistan is said to be the world’s 4th highest user of water. However, despite the increasing consumption of water in the country, little to nothing is being done by the government to ensure that the country doesn’t run out of water. Time and again, it has been reported that Pakistan is becoming a water-stressed country.

Even during the rainy season witnessed this year, conservation of water was minimal. The poor management has led to many cities in the country facing an acute shortage of water. The shortage does not only affect human life but also livestock.

In a recent news item published in a national daily, it had been mentioned that constructing dams is not the only solution to the country’s water problem, rather the irrigation system should be modernised and people should be asked to stop wasting water and use it judiciously.

If in this era the people of a huge city like Karachi are compelled to buy a water tanker worth Rs5,000-8,000, then what should we expect for our future generation? Would they even be able to afford to buy water? Perhaps not. If the government and other stakeholders do not act today, our future generations would be deprived of this basic necessity.
