To those who speak up

#MeToo’ campaign has given power to more and more victims

HYDERABAD: Medical profession is considered as a respectable one for females in our society. But that too is often no less undignified at times. What should one do then? Suffocate the female existence in their homes or teach them ways to help them from being harassed. Unfortunately, there’s no safe space for women. The other day, a girl was raped by a ward boy in Sindh’s Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital. The District Health Officer Mirpurkhas should take punitive measures against the culprit.

In the nursing profession, most girls are from the middle class. Instead of giving them respect and courage, they are harassed or sometimes raped by their fellow male workers. Sexual violence is a harsh reality which would have to be accepted by society. We should admit what has been under the carpet since time immemorial. It would indeed be a criminal negligence if we support the abuser instead of the abused. If we reprimand the rapist, instead of the one raped, we can empower those who speak up, those who have been silenced to suffer. We should not only socially boycott the abusers but simultaneously give respect and care to the victims. Thanks to the ‘#MeToo’ campaign that has given power to more and more victims. In this way, we as individuals can wage a war against entrenched patriarchal structures. We should not support #MeToo as a movement that has been led by women but as a gender that has suffered for years at the hands of their male counterparts.
