Conference on infectious diseases opens today at SIUT

The findings will help make recommendations for a better national strategy

KARACHI: A two-day conference will open today (Friday) at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) to discuss vital issues concerning infectious diseases.

Organised by Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of Pakistan (MMIDSP), the theme of the conference is "where we stand today" and it will focus on infectious diseases. The conference also marks the 25 year anniversary of the society.

Issues of district hospitals discussed at health conference

According to the organisers, the programme will discuss threats posed by infectious diseases and the methodology required to reduce their risk. A delegation from the World Health Organisation (WHO) will also be attending the conference.

The conference is preceded by a series of workshops which highlighted the key areas in the outbreak of infectious diseases, measures as how to carry out infection management in hospitals, clean environment in patient's surroundings, misuse of antibiotics and the role of pharmacy in checking the unhindered use of antibiotics. The workshops also dealt with the outbreak of typhoid which reported over 6,000 cases in the country two years ago and the conference will further discuss these health concerns.

Similarly, the contagious diseases of Congo Virus which also took a few lives this year will also be discussed.

The conference will also arrange biosafety sessions and use of protective equipment for healthcare staff. It is expected that the findings will help make recommendations for a better national strategy for the treatment of infectious diseases.
