EU members of parliament call on India to halt atrocities in IoK

PM Imran, British delegation discuss regional situation

The sub-committee on Human Rights of European Parliament hosted an official exchange of views on situation of human rights in occupied Kashmir at the European Parliament on February 19.

The discussion focused on the June 2018 report of the United Nations’ Office of High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) on Kashmir. Christine Chung, one of the authors of the report, in her comments, highlighted the dire human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir and reiterated the OHCHR’s recommendations for establishing a commission of inquiry to conduct a comprehensive and independent international investigation of human rights violations in Kashmir.

The debate was attended by large number of Members of European Parliament (MEPs), representatives of human rights and civil society organisations, think tanks, diplomats from various countries and members of Kashmiri diaspora across Europe. Overwhelming majority of MEPs rallied behind the recommendations of the OHCHR report and called for their full implementation.

MEPs called on India to immediately halt its atrocities in held Kashmir and carry out investigations into the incidents of grave human rights violations. The MEPs also highlighted the need for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue through dialogue between Pakistan and India, and with full participation of Kashmiri people.

PM Imran, British delegation discuss regional situation

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday highlighted atrocities being carried out by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir as he met with a British delegation led by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi.

The premier, while discussing the regional situation, also spoke to the delegation about the jingoism and war-hysteria being propagated by the Indian government after the Pulwama attack.

Warsi while appreciating the vision and leadership of PM Imran, also lauded the steps taken by the Pakistani government in tackling economic challenges and eradication of corruption.

The delegation which was headed by the Pakistani-origin Baroness Warsi also included Naz Shah, Lord Rogan, Faisal Rashid MP and Jon Davis.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Syed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari was also present during the meeting.
