Unpaid government employees

Government needs to pay urgent attention to redress the grievances of the hunger-striking employees

LARKANA: Since its inception, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has chanted the slogan of “Food, Clothing and Shelter” for the marginalised. However, both the chant and the PPP’s politics have failed. The slogan was given for the nation, but unfortunately the party has never delivered.

Larkana is where the party’s leadership was born more than five decades ago. It is the land of well-educated people. It is Larkana district where the founder of the PPP Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and his daughter Benazir Bhutto — both former prime ministers — were born, but it is unfortunate that the district has suffered no less due to the policies of the party that has ruled Sindh for more than a decade, just in the ongoing stint. The general populace in Larkana are poor. They lack basic facilities, including education, healthcare, employment and clean drinking water.

People have been suffering from lots of troubles. Not just the common people, even government employees are a troubled lot. More than 265 employees of the Larkana Development Authority (LDA) have not been paid their salaries for months. Now they are observing hunger strike outside the Karachi Press Club to press for payment of their salaries and for acceptance of their other demands.

The employees of the Larkana Development Authority are also denied their due promotions. Besides, they have to deal with a corrupt administration.

The 265 employees of the Larkana Development Authority are frustrated with the situation so much so that they have been forced to go on the hunger strike.

The government needs to pay urgent attention to redress the grievances of the hunger-striking employees of the Larkana Development Authority, in particular. The authorities concerned should take stern action against corrupt officials and ensure the payment of LDA employees’ salaries without any further delay.
