‘Friendly policies boost crop production’

Minister for Agriculture Punjab Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh said that as a result of farmer friendly policies by the Punjab government, a record production of major crops had been achieved during last three years.


Speaking at a meeting with farmers in Lahore, he said that the present government was realising the importance of this sector, had diverted a major share of its resources for agricultural sector, to not only ensure self-sufficiency, but to also produce surplus for exports.  He said that wheat production of 18.42 and 18.24 million tons during 2008-09 and 2009-10 was achieved, marking an increase of 18.02 per cent and 16.87 per cent respectively, as compared to 2007-08.

He further said that highest ever wheat production of 18.50 million tons in Punjab provided strength to the attainment of the objectives of food security this year.

The minister added that 52 new varieties of different crops had been developed by the research wing of the Agriculture Department and were approved by Punjab Seed Council, for cultivation during the current regime.
