Women on bikes

Letter February 17, 2019
They are not always available to pick and drop me to my campus

FAISALABAD: Women riding bikes is everything practical and the need of the time. For me, it is everything practical because I choose to look at it with a different point of view as it has nothing to do with women competing with the other gender, as often portrayed by men.

I am a university student and my father and brothers have their own professional commitments for earning daily bread and for that they have to get their presence marked at their workplaces. They are not always available to pick and drop me to my campus. Even after I finish my degree they’d still not always be free for dropping me to my workplace when I start a job. I cannot always travel in a rickshaw or a bus or van and therefore I need a transport that requires nothing else but me, for making it to my destination, if or not, I run out of options. I don’t think that it should hurt any cultural sentiments if decency is maintained and basic manners are practised by both the genders.

Hence, a female riding a bike should be seen as nothing but a human being.
