Lahore Zoo celebrates World Pangolin Day

Zoo administration will also launch a mobile application and an official website soon

LAHORE: World Pangolin Day was celebrated at the Lahore Zoo on Saturday.

A large number of students from various schools took part in an awareness walk. They were provided with information about the threats the current generation of these anteating mammals faces today.

Lahore Zoo Director Hassan Ali Shukhera, Deputy Director Sajid Latif, District Wildlife Officer Tanveer Janjua, Ahktar Mehmood and others attended the event.

An official said eight types of pangolins are found in Asia and Africa and most people hunt them for their meat. Indian pangolins, which are found in Pakistan, have a status of protected animals under the Punjab Wildlife Act, he added.

Mobile app, website coming soon

Lahore Zoo administration has also decided to launch a mobile application and an official website during the current month. The mobile application and official website are being developed with the help of a private educational organisation.

Through the mobile application, citizens can get information about animals and birds. Moreover, interested people will be able to adopt their favourite animals and birds through an online application. Information about any new bird or animals, which are brought to the Lahore Zoo, will also be available on the website.



The Lahore Zoo administration confirmed that the mobile application and website have been developed. However, its official launch is expected by the end of this month. "People can gather all the information about upcoming events to be held at the facility. This is the first time when complete information of any zoo will be available on an official website and a mobile app."

An official at the facility said Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages are also being activated to create awareness among people about animals and birds. Earlier, a Facebook page of the Lahore Zoo was created, but it is deactivated at present. A Lahore Zoo education officer has been assigned to update the social media pages.

A WhatsApp group has also been created for officials of the zoo. On the group, the officials will be able to share information about the growth of animals and birds, their mortality rate, die, and other things.
