Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and a senior advocate of the Supreme Court Syed Zafar Ali Shah has urged the government to take measures for the early promulgation of such a law.
He said this while exchanging views with Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Ahmed Hassan Moughal during a visit to the Chamber House.
Shah said that traders of the federal capital have long demanded a new rent law but the long delay in its enactment was creating problems for them. He stressed that the current government should arrange for an amended rent control bill to be passed into law from the parliament and then enforce it to facilitate traders of the city in getting justice in rent disputes.
To promote business activities, traders need a peaceful and secure environment, he said, adding that the promulgation of a new rent law would help realize these objectives.
ICCI President Moughal said that an amended bill for a balanced rent control law in Islamabad was prepared in consultation with all stakeholders and was subsequently presented in the National Assembly (NA) during the tenure of the previous government.
However, no action has been taken to pass it into law. Delay in enacting the law was a source of frustration amongst the trading community, he added.
Moughal reminded that prior to his election, Finance Minister Asad Umar had assured the capital’s traders that if voted into power, the PTI government will arrange for passing the rent law and for its promulgation in Islamabad.
He called upon the finance minister honour his assurances and to use his influence in the federal cabinet for the passage of the amended rent control law from the parliament without any further delay.
ICCI Vice President Iftikhar Anwar Sethi, Muhammad Naveed Malik, Nisar Ahmed Mirza and Faizan Shehzad were also present at the occasion.
