Education emergency

Only 9% teachers recruited in schools across Sindh can teach math and science subjects

LAHORE: Not quite long ago, an education emergency was declared in Sindh province due to poor literacy rate. Months later, dreadful figures show that the situation has not changed even marginally.

As per the statistics revealed, only nine per cent teachers recruited in schools across the province can teach math and science subjects, which is among the major reasons for the poor literacy rate.

Arguably, what are the criteria for the recruitment of teachers across the province? If it is to pass a teaching examination or test, does it not test them for aptitude in various subjects?

It is shameful that the PPP in its third government tenure in Sindh has not been able to improve the educational situation. Still, the provincial government actively remains critical of the federal government intruding in its affairs.

It is possibly for all the reasons but it is mainly the party’s performance that it has continued to form government in the province since 2008 elections.
