Need for effective police reforms

Letter February 15, 2019
Need of the hour is to look for experienced professionals for discussing issues pertaining to policing

KARACHI: There is much talk about police reforms these days and the PTI-led government under the leadership of PM Imran Khan seems sincere in its efforts for the same too. But unfortunately it seems as if the PM has the tendency to surround himself with too many PAS (erstwhile DMG) officers as advisers for the same.

The PAS officers, who being able to access the PM through their connections and presence in the PM house and the federal secretariat, see all reforms committees as “opportunities to further aggrandise their powers” and the 'lost prestige' of civil bureaucracy (as they see it).

Their core aim is to have more ingress and supervision of the police under their control rather than making it more independent, professional and efficient.

The PAS fraternity neither has any concern with reforms for the betterment of the people of this country, nor do they have any experience related to practical policing issues, challenges, criminal laws and core issues in police administration.

If any kind of reform is spearheaded by PAS, it’ll take this country decades in the past rather than taking it forward as per the aspirations of the people.

The need of the hour is to look for experienced professionals for discussing at length all the issues pertaining to policing and address them one by one at appropriate forums in a transparent manner. This is the only way a fruitful, practical reform can be brought forth which is public-oriented.
