SSUET confers degrees upon 1,000 students

Governor calls for more women to join the workforce instead of being treated as domestic workers after marriage

KARACHI: The Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) organised its 22nd convocation with traditional zeal, which was attended by a large number of educationists, scholars and dignitaries as well as faculty members and students.

On the occasion, around more than 1,000 degrees were distributed among the graduates of the BS and MS programme, while Assistant Prof. Amber Asrar was awarded the PhD degree. Position holders were conferred gold, silver and bronze medals for securing highest marks in the respective disciplines.

Addressing the 22nd SSUET convocation, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail said that if one has learned how to stand up after falling down and faced challenges in life, no one can stop them from achieving success. “You have to survive through the thin phase of your life with patience, determination and courage,” he said. “There is no shortcut in life,” he added.

Governor Ismail went on to say that women were setting higher standards in their academic careers as compared to men. “It gives me immense pleasure to see girls are getting higher education,” he said, adding, however, that at the same time, it saddened him to see them engaged in petty domestic work after marriage.



“Educated girls are treated as housemaids after marriage, while they can not only earn a lot of money with their skills and education, but may also prove to be an effective and value-added human resource for the country and nation,” he lamented, adding that this trend of society needed to be changed for the betterment of the country and nation.

Minister for Works and Services Syed Nasir Hussain said that the constant updating of education and skills is the guarantee of success. “Higher education broadens your vision and prepares you to face the challenges of life and hardship,” he said.

He announced on behalf of the government to build hostels with modern facilities in the Education City and increase the pace of development in the area.

Addressing the ceremony, Chancellor Jawaid Anwar said that Muslims love to be lost in the glory of the past. They never focus on their present and future. For development, it is necessary to get out of the past and try to contribute to society through scientific knowledge and modern technology,” he said.

Chancellor Anwar said that the SSUET was planning to introduce modern courses such as block-chain in the near future, besides establishing a digital library equipped with modern facilities and connected to the online library of the Higher Education Commission.

“It will give students access to unlimited books, research journals and periodicals to make their knowledge rich,” he said, adding that the construction of a modern auditorium was also under consideration.

In his address, SSUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Afzal Haq said that the convocation is the most significant occasion in the varsity’s academic calendar and it represents the culmination of years of diligence and hard work.

The SSUET is an ideological, vibrant and forward-looking institution, he said, that has always remained responsive to advancement in science, engineering, technology and management sciences.

“The university worked hard to promote scientific and engineering education as it always endeavours to offer quality education and state of the art facilities for learning and research so that students gain knowledge and skills and become true professionals in the competitive world of today and future,” he said.

Position holders

Students were also honoured with gold, silver and bronze medals for their outstanding achievements in their academic career. Fariha Mehak (Computer Engineering), Tahir Jamal (Electronic Engineering), Muhammad Burhan (Biomedical Engineering), Maira Nasir (Civil Engineering), Sana Ameen (Telecommunication Engineering), Mehak Kanwal (Electrical Engineering), Quratulain Khalid (Computer Science), Muhammad Sufyan (Software Engineering), Mohsin Ali (Bioinformatics) and Subaiyal Ahmad (Architecture) received gold medals for securing 1st position.

Recipients of silver medals for securing second position included Syed Haris Bin Hafeez (Computer Engineering), Zohaib Hassan (Electronic Engineering), Syeda Kainat Abbas Naqvi (Biomedical Engineering), Isra Nasir (Civil Engineering), Huda Farooqui (Telecommunication Engineering), Mumtaz Siddiqui (Electrical Engineering), Syeda Anusha Nadeem (Computer Science), Faizan Ahmed Jafri (Software Engineering) and Humaid Rizwan (Architecture).

Meanwhile, Ayesha Shaikh (Computer Engineering), Asim Zulfiqar (Electronic Engineering), Hira Qamar Siddiqui (Biomedical Engineering), Saadat Malik (Civil Engineering), Saira Firoz (Telecommunication Engineering), Muhammad Bilal Siddiqui (Electrical Engineering), Muhammad Usman (Computer Science), Syeda Huma Abidid (Software Engineering) and Rashid Mansuri (Architecture) were awarded bronze medals for standing 3rd position.
