FAISALABAD: There is a dire need to focus on renewable energy as Pakistan has a great potential to generate power through these renewable resources, including solar and wind, said experts.
They were speaking at an international symposium titled: “Technologies and materials for renewable energy, environment and sustainability,” organisd by the Department of Chemistry, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad at Iqbal Auditorium on Wednesday.
Addressing the inaugural session, UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Iqbal Randhawa said that renewable energy was getting a key focus across the globe because it is sustainable and can be affordable. “A lot of countries are using solid, liquid and gases to produce energy while we lag behind due to lack of commitments.”
The vice chancellor said that climate change poses a serious threat to the world these days and we have to move towards clean renewable energy sources. Dr Randhawa said that in the next 10 years, the world will shift vehicles to renewable energy. He added that UAF has a lot of potentials to convert the university vehicles on the renewable energy for which UAF experts should come up with solid technologies.
Government College Women University Vice Chancellor Dr Sofia Anwar said that the sciences and technologies are critical inputs for the economic development, poverty alleviation and improvement in the quality of life in both developed and the developing countries.
UAF Faculty of Science Dean Dr Muhammad Asghar Bajwa said over the past some years, science and engineering are seeking to develop improved energy technologies.
He said water is becoming scarce as the country is facing the worst per capita water availability. He said only from the wind energy, the country has the potential of generating 20,000 MW of energy. The material science and engineering provided us with a solution to develop a smart city using smart material with remote metering of energy consumption.
UAF Chemistry Department’s Chairman Dr Ijaz Ahmad Bhatti said that sustainability was only possible if a society attempted to find and implement environmentally compatible, socially acceptable and economically viable means to acquire energy resources. Smart materials are useful in creating a sustainable environment which is eco-friendly and leads to less energy consumption that is boon to our society.
Scientists from Turkey, Malaysia, Mauritius also spoke at the sessions. A large number of students and teachers attended the event.
