However, these implants are so expensive most parents cannot afford this device

DUBAI, UAE: The recent funding cuts to cochlear implant programmes will affect the welfare of the children of Pakistan and their future.

In recent years, it is investigated that in every 1,000 children, three are born with hearing loss. Children with severe to profound hearing loss are unable to hear well even with hearing aids. In such cases, cochlear implant may be helpful. Cochlear implantation is a surgical procedure that includes a medical device which provides access to meaningful sounds for such individuals who are not getting benefit from traditional amplifications. However, these implants are so expensive most parents cannot afford this device.

The previous government had taken a good initiative of a ‘Free Cochlear Implant Programme’ which was many parents’ hope. There kids were in line waiting for their turn, with a dream to join the mainstream in the future but Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government has severely disappointed them. It is the government’s responsibility to extend financial support and help such children who will, in the future, join hands with other children in the growth of the country.

It is my hope that the issue would be considered up by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s office to reevaluate the decision of funds reduction for cochlear implant programmes. A solution should be put forward in order to facilitate the parents of children suffering from this disability. The government should take full responsibility of the health of citizens instead of cutting off aid programmes that are the only hope for many children.

The government is requested to introduce insurance for cochlear implant users. I believe that our government will find a solution to this problem that can risk the health of its people and look forward to seeing positive changes, in an inclusive Pakistan.
