Ulterior motives

There is always a motive behind the charity work rich businessmen do

LAHORE: This is in response to Syed Muhammad Ali’s column titled ‘Can billionaires save the world?’ published on February 1 in this paper.

Mr Ali has pointed out an important issue, as more often than not we have seen the rich indulge in charity work that they publicly display to show how considerate they are by contributing to the welfare of a society – almost like they are looking to gain token points for their philanthropy.

As Mr Ali has mentioned, “critics of elite philanthropy thus remain skeptical of the seemingly magnanimous acts whereby business dynasties and corporate leaders aim to shield themselves from scrutiny over low tax rates, inadequate workers’ pay and unjustifiable monopolies.” There is always a motive behind the charity work rich businessmen do, and the earlier we realise it the better.
