Banning abusive language

After an employee at a newspaper files an application with the anti-harassment cell against her male colleague

LAHORE: Abusing others has unfortunately become a habit or perhaps part of one’s attitude in the country. Hence, even when we are in a work environment and talking to our subordinates we tend to use cuss words to address them when in anger. But gladly this is about to change.

In a recent news story published in this paper, Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplaces Kashmala Tariq said that usage of words like ‘bastard’ and ‘Ullo ki Pathi’ fall within the ambit of harassment.

This comes after an employee at a newspaper filed an application with the anti-harassment cell against her male colleague. She had mentioned in her plea that the colleague “used words ‘bastard’ and ‘Ullo ki Pathi’ in front of entire office staff.”

It has often been witnessed that male colleagues use abusive language not just for their female counterparts but also for their male subordinates. It is time this changed as this only adds negativity to a work environment.
