Tsunami alert issued for Balochistan coastal strip

People from academia, private sector to be inducted in PDMC

QUETTA: The provincial government has decided to induct members from academia, police, and private sector in Provincial Disaster Management Commission (PDMC) for building capacity and effective response during natural disasters.

In the PDMA meeting the other day, chaired by Chief Minister Jam Kamal, the government stressed the need for strengthening rescue and relief department.

Minister for Home and Tribal Affairs and PDMA Mir Zia Langove, Leader of Opposition Advocate Malik Sikandar, Balochistan Chief Secretary Dr Akhtar Nazeer, PDMA DG Imran Zarkoon and secretaries were present on the occasion.

DG Zarkoon briefed the huddle regarding his department’s performance and capacity to respond during natural disasters. He also updated the meeting on the working of Provincial Disaster Management Commission.



The meeting agreed to induct members from University of Balochistan, IT University, police and the private sector in PDMC to strength the capacity and speedy response by PDMA Balochistan.

It was also decided to take assistance from Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) regarding mapping and data collection to tackle natural disasters in Balochistan that would be helpful in proper damage assessment.

CM Kamal said tsunami warning has been issued in the coastal strip of Balochistan, which could hit Gwadar, Pasni, and Ormara and stressed that the government has to prepare itself for quick response and relief.

“The deputy commissioners in their districts should identify the passage of flood that could be helpful in early relief arrangements,” Kamal said and added that efforts from all departments could lighten the burden on a specific department during a natural catastrophe.

The CM stressed upon all educational institution to share their research on natural threats with departments concerned which could be productive to prepare future assessment regarding impact on educational, health, and economic fields.

The provincial government has also decided to make a brief profile of people affected by recent drought that would be shared with the federal government and donor organisations.

“We must properly equip the PDMA and other relief and rescue departments,” said Kamal.

He ordered that an awareness campaign on natural disasters be launched at schools level.
