Film-maker Karan Johar recently made headlines when he revealed that the story of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was based on his own story. It’s a film that was personal and cathartic for me. Ranbir (Kapoor) played me.” Now, The Indian Express has reported that the famed film-maker wants to create a homosexual love story. Will this also have something to do with his personal life?
Karan's career has had countless romantic movies and a couple of them even featured homosexuality e.g. Dostana. But none of them have been a heartfelt gay romance and according to the film-maker, it's high time Bollywood got one.
Speaking of the potential project, the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director said he would cast two leading actors in the film but has not decided yet who that will be. “Being a leading film-maker, I can make movies on the subject. I would love to make a homosexual love story and would want to cast two leading actors in the film. I don’t have in mind specific names of the actors I want to cast in the film, but I surely want to make such a film.”
Karan killed off Anushka in 'Ae Dil...' as revenge for his own unrequited love
Whatever few films that have explored homosexual romance in the past have led to numerous controversies in India. The release of Deepa Mehta’s Fire, starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das, resulted in Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal storming theatres and impeding the film’s release. If Karan does decide to go ahead with his idea, we hope he doesn't have to face the same.
