NAB arrests another suspect in KPT case

KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) claimed on Monday to have arrested one suspect in the illegal appointments scam in Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

According to a NAB spokesperson, suspect, Mehmood Sharif, was arrested after the cancellation of his interim bail from Supreme Court. The spokesperson said that Sharif was wanted in a reference against former ports and shipping minister Babar Khan Ghauri and MPA Javed Hanif on charges of 940 illegal appointments in KPT which violated rules and codal formalities.

The suspect was charged for acting in connivance with other accused persons in his capacity as KPT Human Resources manager, said the spokesperson, adding that he would be produced before the accountability court after legal formalities.

Meanwhile, NAB submitted on Monday, a report to an accountability court on the progress relating to terming Ghauri an absconder in the same case. According to NAB, the illegal appointments caused a loss of more than Rs2.8 billion to the national exchequer.

Hanif and other accused weren't produced before the court during the hearing. According to the report, the bureau is in the final phase of the process to term Ghauri an absconder and is working to procure details of Ghauris' properties. The court adjourned hearing till February 6.

Hanif and others have been arrested, however, Ghauri is a fugitive in the case.
