Remove Rana Sanaullah for statements against Awan: Senate

PML-N's Rana Sanaullah called out for declaring PPP's Babar Awan 'Wajibul Qatl'.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Wednesday passed a resolution against Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, saying the provincial government must remove him from his post over his statements against Senator Babar Awan.

After the budget was announced on June 10, Sanaullah criticized Awan and Punjab Governor Khosa, calling them “black sheep in black coats”.

Sanaullah claimed that Awan was a corrupt lawyer who accepts fees from “corrupt elements who looted the Bank of Punjab”.

He further added that Awan and Khosa are considered “obnoxious characters” within the lawyers community and they should be eliminated.

Sanaullah used the word Wajibul Qatl (liable to be killed) to describe Awan.

The Senate condemned this statement today (Wednesday) and urged the Punjab government to take action against Sanaullah for these remarks.

The Senate also demanded the formation of a commission to investigate the statements and called for disciplinary action against Sanaullah.

The Senate warned that the Punjab government and Sanaullah will be responsible if any harm comes to Awan.

Sanaullah told The Express Tribune that his statements should be taken in the context of the lawyers community, clarifying that lawyers deem corrupt lawyers ‘liable to be killed’.

Sanaullah made these remark after the presentation of budget in the Punjab Assembly. The war of words between the PPP and PML-N is a common thing, but Sanaullah has gone grossly overboard while reacting to Babar Awan’s criticism of his party’s government in Punjab. The Senate noted with concern that a few days after a similar proclamation, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer was killed. The Senate urged the provincial government to remove him from his position and take disciplinary action against him. Supreme Court Bar Association and opposition in Punjab Assembly expressed similar sentiments. Sanaullah’s defence that he did not threaten Babar Awan with murder and that he was just presenting the stance of the lawyers notwithstanding, his statement constitutes incitement to murder. For a law minister to declare someone ‘liable to be killed’ should cause an alarm in the party that propped him up on this position. In a climate where jihadi elements are running amok and killing opponents to resolve difference of opinion has become a normal fare, statements such as these will further strengthen extremist tendencies and give justification to those who believe in extremist ideologies and violent means. Just recently, Khatm-e-Nubuwwat distributed pamphlets in Faisalabad inciting people to kill Ahmedis, calling them wajib-ul-qatl. What is the difference between Punjab law minister and Khatm-e-Nubuwwat? Is it just a coincidence that Sanaullah is alleged to have links with militant organizations?

On one side, the corrupt Army/ISI/Rangers are killing us, on the other the US Drones, on this the politicians are fighting like dogs. Everyone is corrupt & no one has any moral values. Then there is this target killings, insugencies going on. I am at pain to say our nation is coming to a premature end thanks to Gen Zia & his Army!

Mirza | 13 years ago | Reply The right wing extremists and Islamists (Rana Sanaullah is one of them) have always used innocent, stupid, naive Muslims like Qadri to achieve their "goals". Already BB, Salman Taseer and Bhatti have been butchered but the lust and thirst for blood has not subsided. Obviously these murders were not committed by secular and left wing people. There were all victims of wrong fatwas. Secular people are not killers otherwise Rana would have been history. These hate mongers belong in jail. Make no mistake about it, this is not a matter of who is corrupt or who is not. It is inciting people to murder the political opponents. The supreme court and the provincial assemblies should also take action against this chief merderer. PML-N can not win any seats without the cooperation of extreme Islamists, it is their past history and they are never going to go into elections alone.

He keeps on teasing the people of Punjab all the time and above all, I feel pity for our nation whenever I see Mr. Awan giving religious lessons to the nation.

Media anchors also joined the chorus of wajab-ul-qatal and no one moved. Today, finally the senate has moved because a member of the majority has been called wajab-ul-qatal? Selective justice!

Mr Sanaullah, surely you can do better than that. Had given even a cursory glance towards Mr Awan, you would have no doubt come to the conclusion that he is infact, who made Alladin's life a living hell. Though I might suggest Mr Sanaullah to be a bit more cautious in his remarks. At times I wonder if it is really him who speaks out so garrulously.

Mooed | 13 years ago | Reply Hope that you guys remember that Rana Sanuallah is also one of the victims of ISI During Musharraf era while he was the deputy opposition leader of Punjab assembly he was picked up by agencies badly beaten and his head, eyebrows, mustaches and beard were shaved off and he was thrown on motorway in badly injured condition same as was done with umer cheema

I believe Rana S and SS are reponsible for creating the environment which led to the killing of Salman T. They are losing ground and such remarks depict their frustration.

It is not a strange thing if he thinks Mr. Awan liable to be killed. His sympathy and support to the hard-liner elements in society who give fatwa for put to death and kill innocent people by exploding suicidal bombers is no more a secret. Mr Awan you should be careful. Mufti Rana Sanaullah has been released a fatwa against you.
