Workplace hostility

In Pakistan, employees, especially interns, are often not treated fairly

KARACHI: An intern of a public relations firm in the country recently took to social media to voice the injustice she faced during her time as an intern.

On a Facebook post, the former intern accused a notable PR executive of treating her like a ‘slave’. While the executive has denied the allegations, we cannot rule out that in Pakistan, employees, especially interns, are often not treated fairly.

Either they have nothing to do or are overworked or asked to do tasks that add little to nothing to their professional growth such as getting coffee or printer papers.

Laws of the land protect employees from being treated unfairly at their workplaces but many employees do not consider taking action out of fear of losing the job or risking not being hired by another company.

As a result, they go on facing the maltreatment until they are forced to resign.  The federal and provincial governments should consider setting up a platform to help employees

facing afore-mentioned conditions without mentioning their names. Jamal Ansari
