Foreign aid to be used for reconstruction of schools: Gilani

Prime Minister says funds from Friends of Pakistan, World Bank to be used for construction of thousands of schools.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday said that the government is directing foreign aid towards the reconstruction of schools destroyed by the Taliban and that education was its top priority.

Speaking during the National Assembly session, Gilani said that the funds received from the Friends of Pakistan Fund, World Bank and other foreign donors will be used for the construction of thousands of schools.

He said that the Taliban were against education and had destroyed hundreds of schools in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, depriving children of education.

More than 940 schools for girls and boys have been completely or partially destroyed by militants in the province since 2007. Militants have also destroyed 419 government schools in Fata over the years.

Gilani said that forming a strategy against terror attacks was impossible due to their unpredictable nature.

The Prime Minister also announced the formation of a victim's welfare trust along the lines of an Army Welfare trust.

He also informed the house that he had taken notice of target killings in Karachi and sought a report from the Inspector General of Police (IG) Sindh and the Home Minister.

Kamran | 13 years ago | Reply obviously if the foreign aid wont be spend on construction of schools then how come the line ministries will get their 13% commission. if the line ministries wont get the commission then how come the implementing agencies will get the "mithai" for their tender opening and bid opening ceremonies. if the implementing agencies wont get the "mithai" then how come the sheeda, maacha and gaama thekeydar will get his cut from the b grade materials for the projects... its a wonderful "Value AIDED Chain" and these dudes know how to get their share

Mirza | 13 years ago | Reply It is about time that we do the right thing. PM should be given more power to take care of the civilians, finally. The weaker the occupation forces the better for the public. It is a win win situation for the US and Pakistan. Should have been done long ago. However, better late than never. Let us hope and pray that the new democracy and independent courts get more and powerful and independent of the army. We are not inferior to any of our neighbors. However, the only difference is they have made their civil institutions strong

The report makes it quite clear that it is not aid that will do so and acknowledges it may be worsening the problem. Yet it proceeds to make the case for aid.
