Education emergency

Letter January 11, 2019
The incumbent government should pay attention to this issue rather than providing a mere lip service

KECH: Education is the most important requirement for the development of a nation. In fact, no country can progress without educating its population. However, it is unfortunate that Pakistan lags behind in this important field.

There are millions of children in the country who are deprived of education due to our failing education system. According to a recent report, about 22.84 million children are out of school in Pakistan. Balochistan has the highest rate of out-of-school children with 70%, followed by Sindh at 52%, Khyber-Pakhtunkwa 34% and Punjab 40%. On the other hand, Fata has 51% while AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan combined have 47% out-of-school children.

However, one of the major reasons for our debilitating education system is that our educational institutions are deprived of basic facilities such as lack of teachers and proper infrastructure, among other necessary facilities.

There is no denying the fact that our children are the future of our nation but this very future is being deprived of its right to education. In such a case, how do we expect our country to progress?

The incumbent government should pay attention to this issue rather than providing a mere lip service.
