Past 24 hours: Eight killed, 973 injured in road accidents across Punjab

63% of incidents involved motorcycles

LAHORE: Eight people were killed while 973 were injured in road traffic crashes in all 36 districts in Punjab during the past 24 hours. Out of the total number of people that were injured, 596 had to be shifted to different hospitals while 377 of those who sustained minor injuries were given first aid on the site by rescue medical teams.

Majority of the incidents, about 63%, involved motorbikes highlighting the fact that effective enforcement of traffic laws and lane discipline is essential in reducing the number of traffic accidents.

Further analysis shows that 393 drivers, 14 underage drivers, 126 pedestrians and 462 passengers were among the victims of the crashes. The statistics also show that 167 crashes were reported in Lahore, affecting 184 people. Faisalabad came in second with 86 crashes and 101 victims while Multan came in third with 55 crashes and 62 victims.

Data also showed that 981 victims were affected by road traffic crashes including 805 males and 176 females. An analysis of their ages highlighted that 145 were under 18 years of age, 525 were between 18 and 40 and the remaining 311 were above 40 years old. Further, 696 motorcycles, 112 rickshaws, 88 cars, 55 vans, 12 passenger buses, 27 trucks and 114 other types of vehicles and slow moving carts were involved in aforementioned road traffic accidents.
