Our dying children

Letter January 07, 2019
Such incidents have become a frequent occurrence in the country

LAHORE: The news of a 12-year-old boy found murdered in a Mandi Bahauddin village may have not caused much shockwaves across the country but it adds to the statistics of the children we have been losing in the country. It almost seems like that almost on a daily basis there is a news report that states murder of a child, more often than not, after he/she has been sexually abused.

While investigations are underway to determine if the boy was sexually assaulted before being murdered, we cannot rule out the possibility of sexual abuse, especially considering that such incidents have become a frequent occurrence in the country. Our innocent children are being robbed of their childhood by people who are part of our society.

We as a country came together to voice our disgust and sadness over the Zainab murder case, but after the rapist and murderer was awarded capital punishment — also known as death penalty — the country and its people went back to their daily routine, while more children fell victim to rape and murder.

What measures and efforts have we taken to stop such cases from occurring, is anybody’s guess. We go on talking about our economic woes, education emergency and global warming, while our children continue to die at the hands of brutes. When are we going to take stringent actions to save our children? How many more little children have to be abused and murdered before we are able to save one?
