PESHAWAR: Fourteen colliers were kidnapped by unidentified assailants over a dispute between mine owners and a local jirga in Darra Adam Khel on Sunday.

The mine workers were abducted from the Bazar area who had been  employed at a coal mine owned by Abidur Rehman.

Sources say the incident took place after evening prayers. Two miners managed to escape from the kidnappers custody.

Security officials have begun a rescue operation to free rest of the miners.

The mine is owned by relatives of a former parliamentarian Dr Naseem.

Ten of the 14 miners belong to Shangla district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) province.

Earlier on January 1, an explosion took place in a coal mine in the  Dukki district of Balochistan, killing four coal miners and critically injuring one.

The explosion took place as a result of a poisonous gas, which had filled in the mine.

According to Station House Officer (SHO) Chamalang Ghulam Ali four coal miners belonging to the same family were burnt, while one was severely injured.
