KARACHI:

The Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) will send seven athletes to Iran for a month as part of their training before the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship that is scheduled for August.

According to the PWF secretary Muhammad Asghar, the federation has been holding a camp with 15 wrestlers in Islamabad in order to shortlist a seven-member squad for the championship that will take place in Australia.

“We’ll send the wrestlers to Iran in the second phase of the camp,” Asghar told The Express Tribune. “We’ll finalise the squad by June 25 and the wrestlers will get training in Tehran, where they’ll also participate in local tournaments. We aim to hold a joint camp with Iranian wrestlers since the championship will be freestyle instead of the traditional South Asian wrestling technique.”

The event starts from August 5 with wrestlers from 54 countries competing in 55, 60, 66, 74, 84, 96, and 96-120kg categories of the championship.
