Rise in rape cases

Letter December 27, 2018
It seems our children — our future generation — is not safe in Pakistan

KECH: Unfortunately, history is proof that children have been victims of sexual abuse and human trafficking since time immemorial. The increase in the rate of rape in this day and age only proves that this brutal activity is still prevalent.

Last year, the incidents of rape in the country among the cases of abuse were nine per cent which has increased to 12 per cent this year. According to a report published by the NGO Sahil, 2,322 children were sexually abused across Pakistan in the first six months of 2018. Forty-four per cent of them were boys and 56 per cent of them girls. Further, the report demonstrated that only 89 per cent of cases were registered, while others went unreported and most of the victims were under six to 15 years of age.

It seems our children — our future generation — is not safe in Pakistan. NGOs, the government and other stakeholders such as parents should work together to ensure the safety of our innocent children. Only through joint efforts can we make our streets, homes and schools safe for our children.
