Significance of teacher training

Many teachers spend time teaching out of fear without realising that students learn little in such an environment

KETCH: Teachers play an important role in the development of a student’s career. A teacher is someone who not only teaches his or her students but also makes them realise their true potentials, their inner talents and abilities. But it is hard to say that teachers from our institutions in Pakistan have all the qualities of being a teacher.

As a student, I’ve had many teachers but none of them knew how to deal with students. Much effort is being made in ensuring that our children go to school — this is not to say that this should not be done — but similar efforts are not being made to ensure that these out-of-school children get good teachers once enrolled.

In many of our academic institutions, if not all, many teachers spend time teaching out of fear without realising those students learns little to nothing in such an environment. The solution does not lie in removing such teachers as we already have a dearth of teachers, but giving them proper trainings and counseling. These trainings shouldn’t be limited to a year but should be held at least once in two years. Moreover, a continuous teachers’ evaluation system should also be conducted, not just by senior staff but also by students in the form of a questionnaire given to them to fill out— a way to keep checks and balances on their performance.

The government should consider this proposal and work towards it by first conducting teachers’ training programmers across the country.
