Redistributing power: Haroon talks of Security Council reform

The problem he said was in running the United Nations through the five permanent members

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon said on Friday that mere addition of permanent members on the powerful Security Council would not bring about the much-needed reform of the 15-member body. “We basically believe that accountability and democracy should be the main elements for the Security Council reform process,” he said in an interview with Southern California Public Radio. The problem, he said, was not with the Security Council, the problem was in running the United Nations through the five permanent members, and that it was not acceptable any more. The Security Council reform could ensure equitable representation by handing back some of the powers to the General Assembly where they actually belong, the Pakistan envoy added.
