ISLAMABAD:

The federal and provincial governments should completely protect Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) installations, offices and personnel, ordered Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, according to a press release on Friday.

A committee of representatives will try to find a solution to the utility’s labour problems as soon as possible. Thousands of workers who were sacked, reinstated under pressure and then diverted to a surplus pool, surrounded KESC’s head office in Karachi on Thursday.

The increased load shedding has precipitated recurring protests in Karachi and people have attacked its offices and equipment. For its part, KESC says that the union workers are behind the violence as well.

Ministers Naveed Qamar, Farooq Sattar, Hafeez Sheikh and Rehman Malik attended the meeting along with the chairman of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority.
