A ceremony in this regard was held here on Monday to conduct balloting procedure.
The ceremony was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza and attended by ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob, secretaries of law and parliamentary affairs besides four members of the commission.
According to the results of balloting, two members of ECP Abdul Ghaffar Soomro and Shakeel Ahmad Baloch will retire on January 26, 2019 while the remaining two members K-P’s Irshad Qaiser and Punjab’s Altaf Ibrahim will complete their five-year tenures.
ECP gives petitioner 20 days to present evidence
Under Article 215 of the Constitution, the first duration of the two members of ECP has been fixed for two-and-a-half-year period, which will expire on January 26, 2019.
The prime minister and the opposition leader, with mutual consultation, will decide the new two members to replace the retiring ones. In case they do not agree on the names of the two new members, the issue would be referred to a parliamentary committee. The government is bound by law to appoint the two new members within 45 days.
