13 children die as bus plunges into river

The bodies of 13 children have been recovered from a river in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir.

MIRPUR: The bodies of 13 children have been recovered from a river in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir after a school van fell into it early Friday morning.

The accident took place when a school van fell off a bridge and into the river on its way from Ali Baig to Mirpur. Six of the deceased belonged to the same family.

Locals immediately alerted rescue teams about the accident. Rescue efforts are still underway and six children have been saved so far.

The teams are still searching the adjoining areas for the missing children fearing the current might have carried them downstream. According to initial reports, 22 children were on board the van when it plunged into the water.

Anjam Sohail | 12 years ago | Reply That stretch of water from Mangla to Ali Beg has taken so many lives. I fail to understand why an area that is so politically active can't lobby for basic safety barriers between the road and the canal. How many more children need to die?
