Whose sin is it anyway?

Letter December 07, 2018
The minister seems to have a point and the government ought to answer it

SHAPUK: Federal Minister for National Health Service Aamir Mehmood Kiani, while addressing a seminar on December 5, warned that the government would impose ‘Sin Tax’ on cigarette and other tobacco products.

After this announcement, many smokers expressed their views on social media regarding the Sin Tax. It is pertinent to note here that the Sin Tax is not a term coined by the PTI-led government, but it has definitely not gone down well with people, especially on social media.

Federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda also took the micro-blogging website Twitter to criticise the Sin Tax. He tweeted, “I’m a chain smoker myself and I appreciate all the measures taken by the government to discourage smoking and I understand it’s injurious to health but this term ‘Gunah Tax’ is inappropriate. If this is gunah [sin], then what would we name and term the actual gunahs?” The minister seems to have a point and the government ought to answer it.
