Faisal Shahzad agrees to delay in case

NEW YORK: Times Square car bomb suspect Faisal Shahzad has agreed to let the American government delay seeking an indictment against him while it continues discussions with his lawyer.

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday released paperwork saying that they can delay the matter until June 21 to decide on how to proceed with charges in the May 1 attempted bombing, in which an SUV laden with gasoline and propane tanks was parked near a Broadway theatre.

Shahzad was arrested on May 3. The ex-budget analyst from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was on a Dubai-bound plane at a New York City airport.

Authorities say he cooperated with investigators for two weeks before asking for a lawyer.

Shahzad was charged with attempted use of weapons of mass destruction and attempted acts of terrorism.
