Desecration: Shutter-down strike observed in Quetta
A complete shutter down strike was observed in the provincial capital on Thursday to protest against the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran.
The call for the strike was given by Jamiat-Ulema Islam (JUI-Nazriati) and was backed by the traders’ union to lodge their protest.
Most of the trading, shopping centres and some commercial establishments on Jinnah Road, Abdul Sattar Road, Mezan Chowk, Joint Road, Shahrae Iqbal and adjoining areas remained closed for the day.
JUI-Nazriati launched a procession in Quetta and strongly condemned the incident.
The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of culprits involved in the desecration of the Holy Quran.
According to JUI-Nazriati, a week earlier unidentified men attempted to throw the Holy Quran towards electric wires on Saeed Ahmed Khan Road.
Desecration of the Holy Quran is punishable by up to 10 years in prison under the Pakistan Penal Code.
