Preferring water-less country?

Letter November 25, 2018
People should not be so selfish as to ignore the well-being of their own future generations

SUKKUR: The government and experts say Pakistan needs several dams as the country’s water deficiency is fast increasing. On the one hand, water shortage is increasing at a fast pace and, on the other, every a large quantity of rainwater flows into the sea every year. But some political quarters are opposing the construction of new dams tooth and nail. This kind of attitude is beyond comprehension and can only be lamented. What kind of politics is it where narrow parochial interests take precedence over national and larger interests of humanity?

May be, those opposing the construction of new dams get pecuniary benefits from the increasing water shortage. This might be driving their politics. But people should not be so selfish as to ignore the well-being of their own future generations. Do these people want to see a water-less and food-less Pakistan inhabited by under-fed, malnourished people or a country depopulated as a result of lack of water.
