KARACHI: Former Pakistan hockey coach Shahid Ali Khan has urged the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to hold goal-keeping camps throughout the year in order to produce better players.

Khan will supervise a specialised camp for goalkeepers, to be held betwee June 8 and June 20 in Karachi, which has 14 goal-keepers that he and five assistant coaches had picked them from among 60 candidates who took part in a previous camp.

“We selected players, aged between 14 and 22, who had good height,” Khan told The Express Tribune. “This camp will provide basic training to these youngsters and within six to eight months, they’ll learn how to pad and anticipate the ball.

“I can’t say that by Asian Games we’ll have one of our goal-keepers playing for the national squad, but I’ve assured the PHF that within three to four years, we’ll have a pool of goal-keepers to choose from.”

According to Khan, the role of a goal-keeper has changed since the no-offside rule which has increased a goal-keeper’s responsibility because he needs to cover the areas that defenders miss.
