SC bars two private medical colleges from enrolling students

PMDC counsel tells court the two institutes failed to meet requirements

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has imposed ban on admission in Frontier Medical College and Abbottabad Medical College.

Justice Azmat Saeed has said that medical education in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is in appalling condition, the worth of Pakistani medical colleges’ degrees in the world is not more than a piece of paper.

He was heading a two-member bench to hear the petitions regarding admissions in private medical colleges of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Justice Saeed said that the mushroom growth of medical colleges has brought down the level of professionalism churning out doctors that have been made to kill people.

The counsel for Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) told the court that it had banned admissions in Frontier Medical College and Abbotabad Medical College.

He said the ban was imposed for not meeting the required standard.

The lawyer of private medical colleges adopted a view in court that private medical colleges had challenged the directions of PMDC in Peshawar High Court and it had ordered to lift the ban on admissions.

Justice Saeed said that medical education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is in worst condition. Justice Sajad Ali Shah said that medical colleges should have hospital of 250 beds, which these two institutes in question don’t have. Justice Saeed said that after today no admission will be allowed in these colleges.
